The Kiyomizu-dera is a Shinto shrine located in Kodama, Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. Dedicated to the Amaterasu Omikami, the Shinto sun goddess, it is one of Japan's most famous and historic shrines. The shrine is renowned for its beautiful architecture and stunning views of Sagimi Bay.

Visitor tip
To fully appreciate the shrine's views, visit during sunrise or sunset and take a short walk along the river to the west for unobstructed vistas.
Cultural notes
Kiyomizu-dera is famous for its 'stage on the hill' (omikusa) – a wooden stage that protrudes over the valley below. According to legend, this was the site of a divine visitation by Amaterasu. The shrine is also a popular venue for weddings and New Year's ceremonies.
Historical note
The shrine was founded in 1252 by Buddhist priest Minamoto no Tameyoshi.
