Cultural notes
Zuryō-jinja Shrine is one of the few Shinto shrines in Japan that is open to women without chiyōsai (a traditional female attire). The shrine also has a unique tradition of hosting a New Year's festival, where visitors can pray for good harvests and fertility.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 1592 by Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa shogunate.
