Katsuragi Shrine, located in Kamakura, is the principal shrine of the Amaterasu deity and a symbol of Japanese national unity. The shrine complex includes the Kiyome-dono shrine dedicated to the Empress Genmei and the Sengen-taisha shrine dedicated to Hachiman, as well as various smaller shrines and gardens.

Visitor tip
When visiting Katsuragi Shrine, be sure to purchase an 'omamori' (lucky charm) from the on-site shop as you exit the shrine grounds. This tradition is said to bring good luck and protection for the remainder of your journey.
Cultural notes
Katsuragi Shrine has strong connections to the mythology of the Amaterasu deity, who is said to reside at the bottom of the sacred Well of the Heavenly Gods in Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture. The shrine also hosts a famous 'Sakaichi' festival on April 29th, which honors Hachiman, the patron deity of warriors.
Historical note
The shrine was originally located in Kinokawa, but it was rebuilt in Kamakura during the Edo period after a devastating earthquake.
