Cultural notes
大島神社 has historical significance as a place where the samurai lord Matsudaira Katamori, who built the shrine, prayed for victory before his death at the hands of the Meiji Restoration forces. The shrine also hosts an annual Kaito Festival in April to celebrate the patron deity's powers.
Historical note
The shrine was destroyed by fire in 1867, but was rebuilt twice before its current form.
