Located in the city of Tsu, which is part of the former province of Kawachi, Ishinai Shrine has been an important Shinto shrine since the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Dedicated to Ishinai, a kami associated with childbirth and fertility, the shrine is revered for its unique architecture and traditional practices. Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, consider visiting early in the morning or after 4 pm when the sun is not too high. Bring some incense to make a small offering to Ishinai.
Cultural notes
Ishinai Shrine is closely associated with the Shinto festival of Ishinai Matsuri, which takes place on October 28th every year. During this festival, locals reenact an ancient myth in which Ishinai prevents a group of bandits from stealing sacred items.
