Located in the city of Nagahama, Ōtsu Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of fortune and prosperity, Inari Ōtsutsuki. The shrine's name translates to 'The Blessings of Prosperity at Ōtsutsuki'. Its main hall is adorned with vermilion lacquerwork, reflecting its Kamakura period origins.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes

Ōtsutsuki is also associated with the legend of the fox spirit ( kitsune ) and is said to be one of the few Shinto shrines where you can see a fox in the main hall. The shrine's architectural style reflects its connection to the legendary god Ōtsutsuki, with its vermilion lacquerwork adding an air of elegance.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in the early Heian period (794-1185 CE) by Emperor Saga and his wife, Empress Nagako.
