八幡神社

Shizuoka

Located in the city of Izu, Shizuoka Prefecture, Eight-Horned Shrine is one of Japan's most famous and historic shrines dedicated to the god of fortune and prosperity. Dating back to the 8th century, the shrine was built during the Nara period to protect the region from invaders and bring good luck to fishermen. The eight horns on the main gate are said to symbolize the eight districts of Shizuoka Prefecture.

Visitor tip

To avoid waiting in line, consider visiting the shrine early in the morning or late in the afternoon when it is less crowded.

Cultural notes

As one of Japan's 'Seven Lucky Gods' shrines, Eight-Horned Shrine plays a significant role in Shinto mythology and folklore. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful gardens and traditional architecture, including a large torii gate and a five-story pagoda.
