Taiji Machi Inari Shrine is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Taiji, Ibaraki Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto kami of rice and fertility. As one of Japan's oldest shrines, Taiji Machi Inari has a rich history dating back to the 8th century. The shrine is famous for its numerous torii gates that line the road leading up to it, forming a tunnel-like structure known as 'torii-gawa'. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful autumn foliage and take part in traditional festivals such as the annual 'Matsuri' festival.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
As Inari Okami is the kami of fertility and rice, it's common to see large amounts of food offerings during festivals such as the Matsuri. The shrine's torii gates are also said to be a symbol of Inari's protection over crops.
