Resha Gijinja Shrine, located in the city of Hikone in Shiga Prefecture, is dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu and is one of Japan's oldest shrines. The shrine's name, 住吉神社, translates to 'Sun Goddess Shrine' or 'Shrine of Resurrection by Sunlight.' During the annual 'Resha Gijinja Festival,' which takes place on May 15th, visitors can witness a unique ritual where the sacred lanterns are replaced with new ones lit from a candle flame, symbolizing the eternal cycle of life and death.
