野田八幡宮本殿

Okayama

Wild Deer Shrine in Okayama Prefecture, dedicated to the Shinto god Inari, known as 'Sai' or 'Koyoi'. The main hall, designed in Heian period style, houses a large image of Sai and treasures from the Edo period. Visitors come to make offerings for good luck, health, and fertility.

Cultural notes

This shrine is famous for its wild deer that roam freely through the surrounding park. According to legend, the deer were once sacred messengers of Inari who roam the land, delivering prayers to their god. Visitors can feed and pet the deer for a small fee.

Founded in 1603 by a local daimyo (feudal lord), Tokugawa Mitsusada.
