Cultural notes

The shrine is famous for its connections to the Japanese mythical creature, Yuki-onna (Snow Maiden), who is said to appear to travelers during winter and offer them hot tea if they show respect. The shrine's golden sword symbol also represents Minatotokage Okamisan's role as a protector of travelers.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built during the Nara period (710-794 CE), but its main structures date back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE).
