Yamagata

Located in the heart of Yamagata Prefecture, Eight-Horned Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the storm god Susanoo and also enshrines the kami of the eight direction winds (Hachi no Kami). This shrine is one of the most famous shrines in Japan, particularly among sailors and travelers. The current main hall was built in 1688 during the Edo period.

The Eight-Horned Shrine is closely associated with the legend of Susanoo, who was said to have brought peace after a devastating storm. The shrine's complex layout features many subshrines and buildings dedicated to the various kami enshrined here.

Historical note

The original shrine was established in 711 by Prince Nagaya, a descendant of Emperor Kinmei.
