Bunno-jinja, or Eight-Figure Shrine, is a Shinto shrine located in the village of Bunno, within the city limits of Kyoto. Dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), it is one of the oldest shrines in the region. The primary deity enshrined here is Hachiman, the god of war and patron deity of the samurai class. Other kami believed to be enshrined include Saigō Takamori, who was revered for his role as a unifying figure during the Meiji Restoration.

Visitor tip
To avoid crowds, visit during the off-season (February-May or September-November) and try the local specialty, wagashi sweets, at one of the nearby shops.
Cultural notes
The shrine is known for its unique architecture, which blends elements from both Heian and Kamakura periods. During the spring festival season, a large festival is held in honor of Hachiman, featuring traditional games, food stalls, and performances. Visitors can also participate in a prayer ritual to ensure good luck on their travels.
