Iwate

Located in the city of Mutsu, Iwate Prefecture, Horyu-ji Taisha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the god of war, Hachiman-san, who is also revered as the patron deity of the Iwate region. The shrine is famous for its beautiful garden and traditional architecture, dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE). Visitors can explore the serene grounds, including a tranquil pond and walking paths adorned with lanterns.

Cultural notes

Hachiman-san is also associated with the legend of the 'Thirty-six Struggles,' a series of trials that the god endured before finally achieving his goals. The shrine's festival, Hachiman-matsuri, takes place on July 28th and features traditional dances and music.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 718 CE by Emperor Shomu, who is said to have enshrined Hachiman-san's sword, Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, at the site.
