Located in the heart of Enoshima, a small island off the coast of Kanagawa Prefecture, Eight-Sacred-Bridge Shrine (Hakone Matsuoka) is one of Japan's oldest Shinto shrines, with a history dating back to the 7th century. Dedicated to the deity known as Hachiman-gami, the shrine's architecture reflects the classic style of Heian period temples, featuring a large torii gate and several smaller gates along its main road. Cultural notes
The Eight-Sacred-Bridge Shrine is said to be the final resting place of a legendary samurai named Kusakabe no Susumu, who was revered for his bravery and loyalty. During the annual Hachiman Matsuri festival in May, which honors the deity's patronage of military victories, the shrine grounds are filled with traditional performances, food stalls, and games.
