The shrine is dedicated to the Shinto kami of the village of Murayama, located near the source of the Shinano River in Nagano Prefecture. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Japanese design, with a rectangular torii gate and a large main hall. Inari Okunoin, a nearby cemetery for those who have died from illness or starvation, is said to be the final resting place of the Shinto god of rice, rice goddess Inari, as well as various other local deities.

Visitor tip
To make a respectful offering to the shrine, bring a small package of rice crackers and leave it at the base of the torii gate.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its unique cemetery, Inari Okunoin, which contains the graves of people who died under unusual circumstances. According to legend, if you walk between the gravestones in a specific direction, you will receive good luck and protection from illness.
