Cultural notes
As a Shinto shrine located near the Fuji Five Lakes, Waterfall Shrine is deeply connected to the mythology of Ryujin, who was said to have created the lakes by slapping his hand on the ground. The shrine also celebrates the annual 'Fūjin-Sōkyō Taisha' festival, which honors both Ryujin and Raijin.
Historical note
The shrine was founded during the Edo period (1603-1868) to honor Ryujin, who was believed to have protected the region's water sources.
