Tsukasa-yama Shrine, also known as Kamaishi-gu and later known as Hogarashi-jinja, is a Shinto shrine located in the Kamaishi City of Iwate Prefecture. The shrine was originally dedicated to the deity of rice and millet, but over time its focus shifted towards hunting and fishing. Today it remains one of the most important shrines for those involved in these industries.

Visitor tip

When visiting, pay homage to the shrine's patron deity, Hogarashi Okami, by leaving an offering of dried fish at the shrine's entrance. This is believed to bring good fortune for fishermen and hunters.

Cultural notes

Hogarashi-jinja is also famous for its association with the local folklore figure of Hakuro-san, a wise old woman said to possess supernatural healing powers. The shrine holds an annual festival in July, which includes traditional performances and offerings to the deity.

Historical note

Founded during the Nara period (710-794 CE) as a minor shrine dedicated to the kami Enmei Okami.
