愛宕神社 is a Shinto shrine located in Sanno-cho, Akiu-machi, Satsukasei ward of Saitama city, but it was originally founded in 718 in present-day Miyagi prefecture as a branch of the Izumo Taisha. The shrine was later relocated to its current site in Sano town in 1888 due to urban development. It is dedicated to Amaterasu Okami, the Shinto sun goddess and the most important deity of the Japanese imperial family. The shrine is famous for its beautiful gardens, including the famous 'Tsurugaoka' garden, which features a large pond with lotus flowers and walking paths.

Visitor tip
Visit the shrine's garden during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) for a stunning display of pink blossoms around the Tsurugaoka pond.

As an important Shinto shrine,愛宕神社 is deeply connected to Japanese mythology and history. It is also famous for its beautiful gardens, which are designed according to the traditional Japanese concept of 'seki-raku' ( landscape with a central point). The shrine hosts various festivals throughout the year, including the "Love Shrine Festival" held in February, where people come to pray for love and relationships.
