厳島神社

厳島神社 is a Shinto shrine located on the Ogasawara Islands, in Chiba Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to Amaterasu Ōmikami, the Shinto sun goddess. It is one of the most remote Shinto shrines in Japan and was originally built to honor the sea god Susanoo-no-Mikoto.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt after it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1498 and then relocated to its current site on Izu Ōshima, which is the main island of the Ogasawara Islands.
