Hyogo

Located in the heart of Hyogo Prefecture, Shitennō-ji Temple is one of Japan's oldest and most revered Buddhist temples, but not a traditional Shinto shrine. However, the area surrounding the temple has been historically associated with the Shinto deity Inari Ōkami. The name "Shitennō" literally means "Ten Kings," referring to the four heavenly kings from Mahayana Buddhism, while "Ōsaka-shi" refers to Osaka Castle, which was once built nearby and likely dedicated to another Kami. Despite not being a traditional Shinto shrine, it is still an important cultural site for the local community.
