Kanagawa

金比羅社 (Kanayama Shrine) is a Shinto shrine located in Yamato, Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture. It is one of the twelve Shinto shrines that make up the famous Kamakura Gotenba, and is dedicated to the gods Kanayama Okami and Torikawasukunohime. The shrine is renowned for its beautiful gardens, historic torii gate, and traditional architecture, which has undergone few changes since the Edo period.

Cultural notes

Kanayama Shrine is famous for its association with the legendary tale of the 'Great Miracle of Kanayama', which tells the story of a young priest who prayed for victory in battle and was granted his wish. The shrine also hosts an annual 'Festival of Light' (, Meibutsu) to commemorate this event.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 1461 by the Kamakura shogunate.
