正宗稲荷神社

Kanagawa

Located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture, Shōgen Tenmangu Shrine is dedicated to the god of learning and literature, Sugawara no Michizane. The shrine is famous for its vermilion torii gate and its connection to the legendary sword 'Kusanagi'. The shrine's main hall was rebuilt in 1993 using traditional techniques and materials.

Cultural notes

Shōgen Tenmangu Shrine is one of Japan's most famous Shinto shrines and is often visited by scholars and students. The shrine is also associated with the legendary 'Kusanagi' sword, which was said to have been used in the Battle of Yamato.

Historical note

The shrine was founded in 947 CE by Prince Mototsugu, a younger brother of Emperor Murakami.
