日吉山王社 is a Shinto shrine located in the Odawara city of Kanagawa Prefecture. Dedicated to the deity Hachiman Ōkami, it is one of the most famous and historic shrines in Japan. The shrine's current structure dates back to the Kamakura period, although it is believed that the site has been used for Shinto rituals since the Nara period.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
As one of Japan's 'Three Hachiman Shrines,' day 14th is considered an unlucky date for visits. Additionally, the shrine hosts a New Year's Festival (Omisoka) with many rituals and ceremonies.

The shrine was originally built during the Heian period as a memorial to Emperor Ichijo, but its current form was established during the Kamakura period.
