Yatsuyamata no kami, the deity enshrined at Yatsumi Shrine in Tottori Prefecture, is believed to be a kami of mountains and forests. The shrine is known for its beautiful autumn foliage and traditional architecture. According to local legend, the shrine was built during the Heian period (794-1185 CE) by a noble who wanted to appease Yatsuyamata no kami after being afflicted with poor health.

Visitor tip

The shrine has been rebuilt several times since its founding, including in 1708 after a major earthquake destroyed it.
