Located in the city of Odawara, Kanagawa Prefecture, 及川八幡神社 is a historic Shinto shrine dedicated to the god Amaterasu, one of the three chief deities of the Japanese pantheon. Cultural notes
This shrine is closely associated with the legend of Hikotachi no Soshin, a legendary samurai who defeated the enemy at the Battle of Otsu in 1582. According to myth, Hikotachi's ghost was said to appear here after his death. Visitors can also see the shrine's beautiful vermilion torii gate, which is a symbol of Shintoism.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in 1498 during the Muromachi period, but it has undergone several renovations and rebuilds over the centuries. The current main hall dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867).
