Cultural notes

As an important Shinto site, Inari Okami Shrine is believed to be inhabited by fox spirits known as Kitsune, which are revered for their wisdom and magical powers. During New Year's (Oshogatsu), visitors often offer rice cakes and sake to the shrine's fox spirits in hopes of receiving good luck.

Historical note

The shrine was originally built in 736 AD during the Nara period, making it one of Japan's oldest shrines.
