Located in Kyoto, Eight Bays Shrine is one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan, dedicated to the god Susanoo and later enshrined the storm god Benten. The shrine complex features a vermilion torii gate and multiple smaller shrines within its grounds. Its location at the intersection of four roads, known as the 'Four Crossroads,' is said to bring good luck.

Visitor tip

To avoid long lines, visit early in the morning or late in the evening, and consider visiting the shrine's outer grounds instead of the main torii gate.

Cultural notes

Benten Shrine is said to be dedicated to the sea goddess Benten, who protects fishermen and brings good luck at sea. The shrine is also famous for its beautiful garden and traditional festivals such as the 'Benten Matsuri' in May and the 'Hanabi Taikai' fireworks festival in November.

Historical note

Founded in 711 CE during the Asuka period, making it one of Japan's oldest shrines.
