Inari Shrine in Kimitsu, Chiba Prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, the Shinto deity of rice, fertility, and prosperity. The shrine is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates, which symbolize the infinite number of children that Inari Okami had with his wife. Visitors can walk through these gates, known as "fudo myojo" or 'gate passage', to pray for good fortune and success in their endeavors.

Visitor tip
To make an offering at the shrine, tie a red string with your wish or prayer attached to it, known as 'emakimono', on one of the torii gates. This is believed to bring good luck and ensure the wish's fulfillment.
Cultural notes
Inari Shrine in Kimitsu is closely associated with the mythology of Inari Okami and his wife who was said to have taken care of him while he was away hunting. The shrine also holds an annual 'Oyatsukino' festival, which honors Inari Okami and celebrates the changing of the seasons.

The shrine was founded in 1476 during the Muromachi period by a local farmer who prayed to Inari Okami for fertility and prosperity.
