大鳥羽衣浜神社

Located in Osaka, Tamamo no Okami Hammaya Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to the legendary spirit of Tamamo-no-Me, also known as Tamamo-gorihime, a shape-shifting fox spirit from Japanese mythology. The shrine's architecture reflects its history dating back to the Heian period (794-1185 CE), with a main hall featuring a unique hippon-style roof.

Visitor tip

To make a wish, tie a red ribbon around the shrine's main torii gate and take one back home as a good luck charm.

Cultural notes

Tamamo-no-Me is often associated with fertility, prosperity, and protection. The shrine holds an annual Tamamo Taikomata festival to celebrate the spirit's arrival in Osaka.

Historical note

Founded in the Edo period (1603-1867 CE) as an offshoot of the nearby Izumi Taisha Shrine.
