諏訪大社下社春宮

Nagano

Located in the Japanese Alps,諏訪大社下社春宮 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Ōinagahime, the spirit of the sea and fertility goddess. As part of the Shōnai Group of shrines, the shrine honors three main kami: Ōinagahime, Takemikazuchi (god of thunder), and Taka-no-Mori (supernatural being from a nearby mountain). The shrine complex features traditional Japanese architecture, including a torii gate, honden, and shinen (auxiliary shrines) dedicated to the three main kami. Visitors can explore the shrine grounds, which include a lake and walking trails, or participate in festivals held during the spring and autumn seasons.

Cultural notes

The shrine is connected to the mythological story of Ōinagahime, who was said to have descended from the heavens to marry Prince Sogyō, a mortal. The shrine also hosts an annual spring festival called 'Hatsu Matsuri', which features traditional dances and offerings to the kami.

Historical note

Founded in 1553 by Nagano Province's daimyo (feudal lord), the shrine has undergone several renovations throughout its history.
