Located in Ōta, Chiba Prefecture, the Kaihō Shrine is a Shinto temple dedicated to the sea god Raijin, as well as the deity of navigation and maritime safety. The shrine's architecture reflects its coastal location, with wooden torii gates and sliding doors that evoke the traditional Japanese seaside homes.

Visitor tip

Cultural notes
According to local legend, sailors would pray for safe passage at the Kaihō Shrine before setting sail. The shrine is also associated with the Japanese god of storms, Raijin, who is believed to bring both life-giving rains and destructive tempests.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt in 1926 after being destroyed by fire during World War II.
