Byogu Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture is dedicated to the Shinto god of medicine, Namahage no Kami, but also has an association with the god of prosperity and good fortune, Takeko no Kami and, to a lesser extent, Inari Okami. The shrine was originally located at the site of a former Buddhist temple, and its current structure reflects this heritage. The shrine's architecture is typical of Hyogo-style temples, characterized by steeply pitched roofs and sliding doors. Byogu Shrine is particularly famous for its annual spring festival, where participants dress in traditional costumes and perform rituals to promote health and good fortune.

Cultural notes
Byogu Shrine is associated with the legend of Namahage no Kami, who was said to appear as a medicine vendor in ancient times. The shrine's spring festival is also connected to the Japanese tradition of 'Hikihai', a ritual dance performed by women to promote fertility and prosperity.
Historical note
The shrine was rebuilt after being damaged during the Edo period.
