Cultural notes

As one of the oldest shrines in Japan, Zoshogun Shrine is also associated with the mythology of the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine's architecture and layout are said to reflect the harmony between heaven and earth, highlighting Susanoo's role as a divine bringer of rain and fertility.

Historical note

The shrine was built in 711 CE by Emperor Temmu to honor his brother-in-law, Prince Nagaya of Yamato.
