The Sugi Inari Shrine is dedicated to the Shinto god of rice, prosperity, and fertility. Located in the town of Kashima, Chiba Prefecture, it's famous for its beautiful vermilion torii gate and stunning autumn foliage. The shrine dates back to the Edo period (17th century), but its origins can be traced back to the early Nara period (8th century). As one of the most important Inari shrines in Japan, it attracts thousands of visitors each year.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the autumn foliage, consider visiting during the first week of November when the torii gate is especially vibrant.

Cultural notes

As an Inari shrine, Sugi Inari Shrine is known for its numerous shrines dedicated to various fox spirits ( kitsune), which are believed to be enshrined at the shrine. The shrine also hosts a famous festival called the 'Kashima Matsuri' in September, which features traditional dances and offerings.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt in 1736 after a devastating earthquake.
