Tenjin-ya, the Heaven God Shrine in Okayama Prefecture, is a significant Shinto site dedicated to the enshrinement of Sugawara no Michizane, a celebrated scholar and statesman of the Heian period. Visitor tip
To experience the authentic atmosphere, approach the shrine from the west side to avoid direct sunlight, as it is believed that direct sunlight affects the spirit of Tenjin.
Cultural notes
Incorporating elements of Heian architecture, Tenjin-ya features a majestic torii gate adorned with vermilion lacquer and ornate ironwork. The shrine's most notable festival is the Okayama Tenjin Matsuri in March, celebrating Michizane's arrival in Okayama.
