市杵島姫神社

City Katsuragi Shrine is dedicated to Yamato no Okami, a Shinto deity from the Yamato period. The shrine was originally built in 720 AD by Prince Naka-no-Oe, and its current main hall was completed during the Edo period. City Katsuragi Shrine features two large torii gates made of Japanese cypress, which are considered symbols of good luck and prosperity.

Visitor tip

For a truly immersive experience, try to visit during the autumn leaves season (mid-November to mid-December) when the shrine's vermilion torii gates stand out against the vibrant foliage.

The shrine is famous for its beautiful garden and the statue of Yamato no Okami standing inside the main hall. It's also a popular spot for autumn leaves viewing during the Kyoto Autumn Leaves Festival.
