Cultural notes

Hie Shrine is famous for its iconic torii gate made from giant cypress trees, and it's a popular destination for New Year (Oshogatsu) visits. The shrine also has strong connections to the mythology of the 'Kitsunetsuki,' or fox spirits, as one of its legends features a fox spirit that granted its wishes to those who showed kindness.

Founded in 757 AD by Prince Nagaya, a grandson of Emperor Shōmu.
