Cultural notes

In Shinto mythology, the Eight Dragon Gods are believed to have been born from the primordial waters of the earth. The shrine's worship of these deities is closely tied to the local legend of the eight dragons that were said to have emerged from the sea to aid the gods in their creation of the world.

Historical note

The shrine was rebuilt during the Kamakura period (1185-1333 CE) after being damaged in an earthquake.
