Hahaku-sha is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Hachiman, the god of war and plague prevention, located in Mutsu, Iwate Prefecture. The shrine is famous for its distinctive black roofs and is one of the few shrines in Japan with this unique architectural feature.

Visitor tip
To avoid harsh winds, it's best to visit Hahaku-sha early in the morning or later in the evening. Bring a warm coat as the wind can be quite strong.

Hachiman is often depicted with a bow and arrow, symbolizing his role as a protector of warriors. The shrine's unique architecture may have been influenced by the local Iwate region's unique culture, where the black roofs are thought to resemble the dark skies of the region.
