Wood grain kami, Kukuryū no Oyajin shrine in Fukue town of Onagawa district, Shikoku, is dedicated to the wood-grained deity, Kukuryū no Oyajin. The shrine's main hall was rebuilt in 1959 after being destroyed during World War II. It is a relatively small shrine with a beautiful garden and a peaceful atmosphere. Wood grain patterns can be seen on the torii gate and at the base of the main hall. The shrine is also famous for its unique 'wood-grain' tile roofing.

For a more immersive experience, try visiting the shrine during cherry blossom season (late March to early April) when the garden is particularly beautiful.

Cultural notes

Kukuryū no Oyajin is a Shikoku-specific deity believed to have the power to protect and bring good fortune. The shrine's unique 'wood-grain' tile roofing is said to be an expression of its deity's connection to wood grain patterns, which are also found in Japanese art and design.
