Located in Kinugusa, a village at the foot of Mount Choso, Shimoji Shrine is one of the three hundred and fifty shrines that make up the Nihon Sankei, a collection of Shinto shrines dedicated to the three major kami of Japan. Dedicated to the mountain spirit, Shimoji no Okami and other regional kami, the shrine honors the area's rich history and natural beauty. Visitors can explore the shrine's traditional architecture, including its thatched roof and wooden torii gate.

Shimoji Shrine is also known for its connection to the legend of the 'Eighty-Two Youth', a famous Japanese folktale about young men who sacrificed themselves to save their village from an invading horde.
