The Godai-jinja Shrine, also known as the Godaikannon Temple, is a Shinto shrine located in the city of Nagaoka, Niigata Prefecture. The shrine is dedicated to the worship of three Shinto deities: Izumo Tenjin, Hachiman-gami, and Susanoo-no-Mikoto. It is one of the most important shrines in Japan, attracting millions of visitors each year.

Visitor tip
To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening. Also, be sure to try some of the local specialties at the food stalls near the entrance.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its beautiful architecture and stunning views of the surrounding mountains. It also hosts an annual festival called the Nagaoka Godai-jinja Matsuri, which features traditional music, dance, and theater performances. In addition, the shrine has a unique tradition of worshipping the god of learning, Tenjin.
Historical note
The shrine was originally built in the Heian period (794-1185 CE), but its current structure dates back to the Edo period (1603-1867 CE).
