Cultural notes
Inari Shrine is closely tied to the mythology of Inari Okami, who is said to have been a servant of the sun goddess Amaterasu. The shrine's numerous shrines and torii gates are believed to represent the many rice fields that Inari tended during his lifetime. Visitors can participate in the traditional festival of Oyasato Matsuri, held twice a year to honor Inari Okami.
Historical note
The shrine was established during the Edo period (1603-1867) as a major Shinto site in Tokyo.
