Located in the city of Omi, Hikone, Shiga Prefecture, the Ōmicho Shrine is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Inari Okami, the kami of rice and fertility. The shrine's architecture reflects the traditional Heian period style, with a wooden torii gate and a vermilion paper roof. Visitors can explore the shrine's main hall, dedicated to Inari Okami, as well as its subsidiary shrines for various regional deities.

Visitor tip

For a unique perspective on the shrine, climb up the 120 steps leading to the main hall at sunset, when the setting sun casts a golden glow over the surrounding landscape.

Cultural notes

Inari Okami is revered for his role as patron of farmers and artisans. During the spring festival, known as Hanami, visitors can participate in traditional dances and games, such as 'Yamaboko' ( mountain wrestling) and 'Ryoba no Jubei' ( cherry blossom-throwing).
