首塚神社

Akita

Located in the city of Datsuno, Akita Prefecture, Principal Shrine's history dates back to the Edo period and its name, 'Principal Shrine', was originally given by the Tokugawa shogunate. The shrine is dedicated to Ōkuninushi no Kami, a Shinto deity believed to be responsible for fertility, prosperity, and protection. As one of the most important shrines in Akita Prefecture, it attracts many visitors each year.

Cultural notes

Ōkuninushi no Kami is also associated with the myth of Ōkunitsuna, who was said to have been beheaded by his brother, but was later resurrected and became a powerful kami. The shrine's architecture reflects its historical significance, with a distinctive vermilion torii gate and a beautiful garden.
