The Taihakuten or太神宮 is a Shinto shrine dedicated to the Sun Goddess Amaterasu in Niigata, Japan. The shrine's current structure dates back to the Heian period, with a rebuilt main hall during the Edo era. A sacred site located at the foot of Mount Higashi, it holds great cultural significance as a symbol of the region's history and heritage.

Visitor tip
To respect the shrine, remove your shoes before entering the main hall and avoid taking pictures inside the innermost sanctum.
Cultural notes
Taihakuten is connected to the myth of Amaterasu, who descended from heaven to the earth in this region. Locals believe that on certain days, the goddess's spirit can be seen ascending Mount Higashi, returning to her heavenly realm.
Historical note
The shrine has been continuously maintained for over 800 years, since its founding in 746 CE by Emperor Shomu.
