熊野神社

Miyagi

Located in the city of Sendai, Matsushima-kyo in Miyagi Prefecture is home to Heike-ji Shrine and Oshimo Shrine but the most well-known Shinto shrine in the area is Zao Onsen Shiranami no Sato's lesser known cousin, Kisenma Shrine and more prominent one, Higashi-Matsushima-ku's Heiwa-jinja Shrine. However, the most popular and well-known one in the region is probably Zao Onsen Shiranami no Sato's neighboring Shinto shrine called Zao Toshogu's lesser known cousin and also, but not the most prominent one, Zao Onsen's lesser known cousin which has a primary enshrined deity of Inari. The main object of worship at this shrine is Inari Okami, the Shinto god of rice, fertility, and prosperity. This Shinto shrine is located in a beautiful natural setting, surrounded by mountains and forests, and is famous for its stunning autumn foliage.

Visitor tip

To fully appreciate the beauty of this shrine's autumn foliage, visit during peak season (late November to early December) and take a leisurely walk along the nearby river.

Cultural notes

Inari Okami is often depicted with multiple faces or hands in Shinto art, representing his ability to hear and grant wishes. The shrine hosts an annual Inari Matsuri festival in late July to honor the god of fertility and prosperity.

Historical note

The shrine was established in 1840 as a branch shrine of the Zao Toshogu Shrine, but it was relocated to its current location in 1908.
