Mandarayōmin Inari Takamagahara Hachiman Taisho is a Shinto shrine located in the town of Sakaya, Chiba Prefecture. Dedicated to Inari Okami and Hachiman Okami, it is one of the most famous shrines in Japan and has a rich history dating back to the Nara period (710-794 CE). The shrine complex features two main buildings: the Honden, dedicated to Inari, and the Seiden, which serves as the Hachiman Shrine. Visitors can participate in traditional rituals, such as making offerings at the torii gate and praying for success and good fortune.

Visitor tip

To avoid long lines, visit the shrine early in the morning or later in the evening when it is less crowded. Bring an offering of rice grains for Inari and pray at the torii gate.

Cultural notes

Inari Taisho is famous for its thousands of vermilion torii gates that lead to a beautiful forest, where visitors can walk through and make wishes. The shrine also hosts the Mandarayōmin Festival in May, which features traditional dances and music. Hachiman Okami is revered as a god of war and patron deity of samurai, and his influence is still felt today in Japanese culture.
