The Twelve Shrines of Nada is a series of twelve Shinto shrines located along the coast of Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. This shrine, dedicated to the sea god Susanoo-no-mikoto and the sun goddess Amaterasu, is one of the most well-known shrines in the Twelve Shrines of Nada. The shrine's architecture reflects a mix of traditional Shinto styles, with a unique wooden torii gate that stands out among other Japanese shrines.

Visitor tip
To make a wish at the shrine, visitors should first tie their shoelaces together with a red string, then toss them into the sea. The number of knots corresponds to the visitor's wishes.
Cultural notes
The shrine is famous for its stunning coastal location and annual festivals celebrating Susanoo-no-mikoto and Amaterasu. During the New Year (Oshogatsu) festival, visitors can participate in a ritual called 'Shinbun no O', where the shrine's priests read prayers aloud from an ancient scroll, believed to have been written by Susanoo-no-mikoto himself.
Historical note
Founded during the Heian period (794-1185 CE), this shrine has been an important center for the worship of Susanoo-no-mikoto and Amaterasu in the region.
